00.0– 05.59

Visual observer on Ketep post reported that at 02.10 there was ash rain and rumble sound from the peak. 800 m high smoke came from the peak toward west and southwest at 05.00 am until 07.15 pm. Once, the smoke has reached 1500 m high at 06.26 am. 3 km hot cloud flowed 3 km along Gendol River.

06.00 – 12.00

Volcanic material moved along Gendol River for 1 km at 10.35.

12.00 – 17.59

Lava on Kuning River has reached and fullfiled the bridge of Sidorejo, Sidorejo sub village, Hargobinangun. It is located in 9.5 km from the peak. In Gendol River, lava and volcanic material has filled the dam on Morangan sub village, Sindumartani that is 16,5 km from the peak. Ash fall was occurred in Salam and Muntilan until 16.00 pm.

Due to the high volcanic activity G. Merapi and the status is still set at the level of caution, government is recommended as follows:

  1. It shall be conducted an investigation of volcanic ash that could potentially interfere with flight route to and from the Adisucipto. International Airport, Yogyakarta. And, Yogyakarta Airport has already closed until November 15th.
  2. Any activities in disaster prone areas III are not allowed, particularly for those who stay around the river (the threat of danger hot clouds and lava flood) that tipped in Merapi Southeast, South, Southwest, West and Northwest sectors ( Woro river, Gendol river, Kuning river, Boyong river, Bedog river, Krasak river, Bebeng river, Sat river, Lamat river, Senowo river, Trising river, and Apu river).
  3. Immediately evacuate IDPs to safer places place outside a radius of 20 km from the peak of Merapi Volcano.

The impacts of Merapi eruption are not for the villages on the hazardous area only. It causes negative effects also to further areas. Muntilan, for example, has suffered from the eruption also. Electricity has been turn off for a week, traditional market is not running, other economical sectors are not alive. These difficulties have influenced many civilians. Furthermore, some villages have to manage IDPs by their own hand. The situation is not getting better. Some villages that should be not evacuated also are lack of food and money since the economic sectors have stopped for more than a week.

Some IDPs depression cases are found in some posts / barrack. Two days ago, there was a suicide committed by IDP in Maguwoharjo Stadion. It is realized by many organizations that IDPs need to be relieved from their psychological burden.

B. Coordination

KARINAKAS conducted assesment to the areas that was assisted before. Since the evacuation of IDPs was going on and IDPs are moving from one place to another, data will be improved due to vulcanic activity of Merapi.

·Psychosocial program is still on the preparation. Discussion with Sanata Dharma University, Catholic University of Semarang, and Tlatah Bocah community is started on this week. The result will be executed next week.

·Since IDPs were on psychological burden, they have to be relieved. They should have a activity to fill their off time on the post. KARINAKAS will cooperate with AKSARA, a humanitarian organization, to conduct activities for IDPs. The cooperation between KARINAKAS and AKSARA will be conducted on the second phase of emergency response project, after November 23rd.

·Water Sanitation project has already begun in Major Seminary Posts. It is the work of KARINAKAS and OXFAM Great Britain. It will be started also in other posts.

·Trocaire, Caritas Germany, Caritas Austria, Caritas Switzerland, Caritas Chech, and Caritas Australia have responded ER proposal that has submitted before. CRS will support with some items to distribute for 3.000 families. Caritas Switzerland will support items on the second phase of Emergency Response.
