EMERGENCY RESPONSE OF MERAPI ERUPTION

A. General

Due to the reduction of hazardous areas in several districts, Government predicts that around 80 thousands IDPs will be back to their houses in all affected districts. Nevertheless, before the reduction, many IDPs have come back several days ago even though their villages are not in the safe zone. The detail of safe zone of Merapi Eruption is as follow:

Hundreds of villagers who have returned to their village near Senowo River, Dukun, Magelang, were evacuated. After two hours heavy rain on that area (17.00 – 19.00, November 21^st), volcanic materials flood on the Senowo River was struck. It was located at 10 km from the peak.

National Office of Disaster Risk Reduction (BNPB) decided to strengthen the security of the road to the dangerous areas. Since the reduction of the danger zone, people entered dangerous zone just to visit or take pictures. Some IDPs also returned home even their villages was still in the dangerous areas.

B. Coordination

·Still in cooperation with MNC Network and Respati University, KARINAKAS support medical assistance to IDPs and also to those who have been home. Medical assistance is support areas where there is no assistance. The medical team is also looking for neglected areas. Now, the team has served Magelang and Kulonprogo District. In the next day, Klaten and Boyolali District will be served. In cooperation with the Parishes team, information and coordination is conducted and running well.

·KARINAKAS started to work with the new selected parishes. Medari, Sumber, and Pakem parishes have already prepared logistic distribution to those who are returning home. Supporting with food item, non food item, and also hygene kit.

·Request that comes not from the parishes request still will be served well even though our priority is selected parishes. However, KARINAKAS suggests to the requesters to ask nearest parish to get the support. Our coordination will do as that way. KARINAKAS will provide logistic support to selected parishes, then the parishes team will deliver the relief items to the needy ones. This such coordination has already implemented by parishes in Magelang District.
